Substrate for a tropical terrarium: check the intended use
Choose a terrarium substrate for the plants, any animals and water management. A mix intended for a pot or aquarium is not automatically interchangeable.
Define the setup
Note the vegetation, animal species, drainage and access for cleaning. Identify the purpose of each layer and the stated use of each product. The needs of a planted terrarium without animals may differ from those of an occupied habitat.
Choose suitable products
Compare terrarium equipment and the exact composition of each substrate. The guide to mixes for potted plants covers a different use. Do not infer that a mix is safe for all reptiles from the word “tropical” in its name.
Check water and lighting
Monitor drainage and conditions for the plants. The guide to lighting a planted terrarium and the guide to LEDs, UVB and heat add to the habitat preparation.
