Fertiliser for tropical plants: choosing and dosing

Choose a fertiliser intended for your plants and follow its label. Pale leaves or slow growth do not automatically call for more fertiliser.

Check care conditions before feeding

Check the substrate, roots, watering and light. Note any nutrients already in the mix and the products used recently. If a plant is growing slowly for another reason, it is not necessarily underfed.

Choose for a foliage plant

Compare fertilisers for indoor plants by their stated use, nutrients, dilution and frequency. A growth-and-bloom pack is not automatically the best choice for a Monstera or Alocasia: check each component and avoid unnecessary additions.

The choice between liquid and solid fertiliser also affects how you manage applications. Read the differences between liquid and solid fertilisers.

Dosing: follow the product instructions

  1. Identify the exact product and check its intended use.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s dosage and frequency; do not copy instructions from another brand.
  3. Use an appropriate measuring tool and record the dilution.
  4. Adjust according to the instructions and the plant’s activity without exceeding the directions.
  5. Avoid combining fertilised potting mix, a long-lasting solid and liquid feed without considering the total.

When to seek a diagnosis

If symptoms persist, document the plant, its substrate and feeding history. The guide to plant nutrient deficiencies organises the checks and explains that a symptom alone is not proof. An aquarium fertiliser must not be described as a human supplement or prescribed by default for a terrestrial plant.
