Watering tropical plants: observe before watering
When to water depends on the species, substrate, pot and light. No fixed schedule works for all tropical plants.
Check several indicators
Check moisture below the surface, the weight of the pot and water drainage. A dry surface does not always mean the whole root ball is ready for watering. An air hygrometer cannot replace this check of the substrate.
Water, then let it drain
Use a pot with drainage holes and empty the cachepot after the water has drained. Adapt your method to the plant and chosen mix. If the pot stays saturated for a long time, check drainage and root condition before adding more water.
Adapt to changes in growing conditions
A new substrate, larger pot, grow light or change of season may alter the watering rhythm. Read the tropical plant care guide and the substrate selection guide. To equip your setup, compare pots and potting mixes, checking size and drainage.
Do not diagnose from one leaf alone
A soft, yellow or brown leaf may have different causes. Record the pot and its history with the yellow-leaf diagnosis guide. Air humidity is a separate subject: read the humidity guide.
