LED grow light distance: adjust your setup

There is no single LED-to-plant distance that works for every plant. The model, optics, intensity, coverage and natural light all affect the setting.

Start with the product information

Check the instructions for the exact model and variant, its intensity setting and mounting conditions. Note the distance above the top of the foliage and at its edges. If the manufacturer publishes a PPFD map, check the area and measurement distance before comparing it with your setup.

A repeatable check

1. Record the model, height, schedule and setting.
2. Observe leaves close to the light and those at the edges.
3. Make gradual adjustments without changing every growing condition at once.
4. Check again after new growth or a move.

Lux cannot be converted to PPFD using a universal factor independent of the spectrum. Power draw at the socket does not describe the light reaching a leaf either.

Choose a suitable shape

A directional bulb, bar and light fitting distribute light differently. Compare lights for indoor plants and read the Monstera setup scenarios before choosing a wattage.
