Light for tropical plants: assess your space
Before buying a grow light for a tropical plant, compare the available light with the space, species and seasons.
Assess the growing area
Note how close the plant is to a window, any shading, the depth of the shelf and the height of the foliage. A room that seems bright to you may still have a dim corner for a plant. Distinguish light that is comfortable for reading from daily light reaching the foliage.
Choose the right guide
To understand the selection criteria, read the guide to lighting indoor plants. To compare lamp shapes, see the use-based comparison. For a spot without a window, the guide to setting up lighting without natural light covers the specific constraints.
When a grow light may help
If your observations point to a need for supplemental light, look at indoor plant lights alongside your measurements and mounting options. Keep track of new growth and adjust watering too; an LED does not address every cause of slow growth.
