When to repot a houseplant: signs to check

Decide whether to repot based on root and mix condition, not just slow growth. Prepare the pot and substrate before starting.

Check the pot and roots

Note how quickly the mix dries and whether the plant is stable. Very crowded roots, deteriorated mix or an unstable pot may justify repotting. If the plant is declining, also check watering and light; repotting is not a universal treatment.

Prepare a suitable pot volume

Choose a pot and substrate suited to the species and root volume. A much larger pot can hold a different amount of water. The substrate guide helps compare structure, while the step-by-step guide to moving young plants covers a separate stage.

Monitor the plant after repotting

Record the date and adapt watering to the new mix. Check for nutrients already present before adding fertiliser. Read the watering method and the tropical plant care guide.
